$23.2 Million Jackpot Hit and 43 Winning Match 5 Ticketsin January 23 Drawing
URBANDALE, Iowa – POWERBALL® is celebrating a HUGE winner tally from the Saturday, Jan. 23 drawing. In addition to the $23.2 million jackpot hit in New Jersey, the drawing produced 43 winning tickets worth $1 million to $2 million – the largest number of millionaires created in a Powerballdrawing in the last five years. The winning Match 5 tickets were spread across 18 jurisdictions.
“Every Powerball drawing is life changing,” said May Scheve Reardon, Powerball Product Group Chair and Missouri Lottery Executive Director. “We want to thank the players who jumped back into the Powerball game and continued to play responsibly after the record-pushing Powerball and Mega Millions jackpot hits this past week.”
Last week was a winning week for U.S. lottery players with three jackpot hits between the two national games in a matter of days, including the $731.1 million Powerball jackpot won in Maryland on January 20, the $1.05 billion Mega Millions jackpot hit in Michigan on January 22, followed by the $23.2 million Powerball jackpot won in New Jersey last Saturday. The last time the Powerball jackpot was hit in back-to-back drawings was nearly six years ago in March 2015.
The winning numbers in the January 23 Powerball drawing were white balls 05, 08, 17, 27, 28 and Powerball 14. In Saturday’s drawing, 35 tickets matched all five white balls to win $1 million (AZ-2, CA-7*, FL-4, IL, MA, MO, MT, NC, ND, NJ, NM, NY-11, TX, WA, WI). Eight other tickets (FL-2, GA, IL, NH, NJ, NY, PR) matched all five white balls and doubled the prize to $2 million by including the Power Play® option for an additional $1.
This was the most millionaires created in a Powerballdrawing since the world record $1.586 billion Powerball jackpot was hit on Jan. 13, 2016. That drawing created 81 winning Match 5 ticketsin addition to the jackpot winners in California, Florida and Tennessee that shared the record prize.
The Powerball jackpot has reset to $20 million for the next drawing on Wednesday, January 27. Powerball tickets are $2 per play. Tickets are sold in 45 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Drawings are held every Wednesday and Saturday at 10:59 p.m. ET. More than half of all proceeds from the sale of a Powerball ticket remain in the jurisdiction where the ticket was sold. In the Saturday, Jan. 23 Powerball drawing alone, nearly $20 million in revenue was generated for vital public services and programs supported by U.S. lotteries.
*In California, Powerball prize amounts are pari-mutuel and will vary depending on ticket sales and number of winners.
