A Leitchfield, KY man was in disbelief after he discovered he won $50,000 on a Powerball ticket.
Sanford Meyers’ winning ticket matched four white ball numbers and the Powerball to win the game’s $50,000 prize.
He purchased the winning ticket at Center Court Food Mart on Brandenburg Road in Leitchfield.
He said he doesn’t play often and will usually buy a Powerball ticket once a month.
Meyers told Kentucky Lottery officials that the ticket laid on his desk for several days before he checked it.
“I told my wife I needed to look at that thing,” Meyers said. “I pulled up the website and looked at it [ticket] and said, “I think I won a hundred and fifty bucks.”
Meyers took the ticket to a store later that day to have it checked.
“She [store clerk] scanned it and said, ‘$50,000,’” Meyers recalled. “I said, ‘you’re kidding me?’ I made her scan it at least three times! I’m happy, I still can’t believe it, though.”
The Grayson County man showed up at lottery headquarters on May 9 and received $36,000 after taxes. He told officials he didn’t have any immediate plans for the winnings.
“I don’t get too excited,” he said. “I’ll wait until I have the check in the bank.”
Center Court Food Mart will receive $500 for selling the winning ticket.
