A Louisville man cashes in big on a Powerball ticket he purchased on a whim and ends up winning $150,000.
The man, who wishes to remain anonymous, told Kentucky Lottery officials he received a promotional email which lead him to buy the ticket online.
The winning ticket matched four white ball numbers and the Powerball to win the game’s $50,000 prize on the July 8th drawing. The prize was multiplied to $150,000 since he added the Power Play feature to his ticket for an additional $1. The Power Play number drawn was 3.
“It was my first time playing Power Play,” the man said. “I really wasn’t even sure how it worked. Fortunately, I played it this time.”
It wasn’t until he checked his email the next day that he saw a notification from the lottery letting him know of the big win.
“I looked and saw Kentucky Lottery and thought it was another promotional thing,” he said. “I opened it and it said, ‘Congratulations.’ It really set my mind off, I read down to the second line, and it said, ‘$150,000!’”
He told officials he went on the Kentucky Lottery app and saw a notification confirming the win.
“That’s when I knew it was real,” he said.
He said he called his wife to tell her the big news.
“I told her, ‘I’ve hit the lottery for $150,000!’ She didn’t believe me,” he said.
“I’m sitting there waiting for him to tell me he’s not telling the truth,” his wife said. “Naw, you’re lying.”
He sent her a screenshot and she pulled the winning numbers up online.
“Okay, maybe it is true,” she said. “He’s pretty lucky.”
The Jefferson County man received a check on July 10th for $108,000 after taxes.
He told officials that he and his wife are both planning to retire, and that the extra money will help.
